Mercadona accelerates its off-site strategy with Onfly

Mercadona is the number one Spanish food retailer. Founded in 1977, the company has experienced phenomenal growth and has completed an exceptional year in 2019, which saw its turnover and profits grow by 5%. Enough to deploy numerous shops internationally, almost 1 shop per day. Mercadona not only belongs to the large retailer industry, but also designs, executes and maintains all its assets: warehouses, logistics blocks, shops, offices and “hives” (exclusive warehouses for online sales). This makes it the leading Spanish construction company in terms of the size of the technical team and invoicing/m2 built.

To respond to strong market traction, this implies building adequate spaces where digital transformation becomes essential. So, Mercadona has organised itself to build efficiently, including innovative BIM processes. The objective is simple: build better, faster, more respectfully and sustainably. As process and technology go hand in hand, the Spanish chain is seeking to develop a single source of information that facilitates traceability during the construction phase as well as during operation. By building a database, Mercadona will be able to easily assess the quality, durability and performance of all elements of its off-site projects. With this in mind, the Spanish leader has called on Onfly.  The tool represents the means to have a content manager as a unique repository, from which the different subcontractors and companies can retrieve the standardised parameters and make them accessible to all their internal teams.


Mercadona’s Onfly cloud

The Onfly space for Mercadona is a cloud-based repository managed by Mercadona‘s internal BIM team. At the same time, it is also maintained by the consultancy firm Wisebuild, which was chosen to support Mercadona in its digital transition and in defining its data structure. 

The large number of users involved in a project, in addition to the number of simultaneous projects Mercadona has to deal with, requires a clear and agile process in the generation of new objects. From the moment the need for a “new object” is generated to its creation and insertion in a model, a series of steps must be followed to guarantee the maximum quality of the content generated. Mercadona, in order to materialise this workflow, relies on Onfly, which allows the established procedure to be materialised. Combining off-site construction and BIM

The aim of this partnership is for Mercadona to start driving change through a first stage of collaboration with its teams using Onfly, saving time and replicating the same types of supermarkets in the country.

Offsite construction allows for better and faster construction of parts of a building in a factory to form modules and reduce on-site actions. In this perspective, it is necessary to assemble products and therefore to bring manufacturers together to collaborate but also to facilitate future manufacturers in the factory to assemble their products in order to certify the performance in the factory for example. Everything starts from the product, and its BIM object, and this collaboration between the actors in the field and the manufacturers around the construction products can be facilitated thanks to digital technology which allows the definition of the expected models, in particular through BIM.

By combining off-site with Onfly, Mercadona can anticipate what it will build, and define in advance the characteristics, object types and models of its project. By organising itself in this way, the chain can then avoid mistakes once construction has begun, saving time and materials.

Off-site construction involves the assembly of the various elements of a building within a workshop or factory. Here, errors in the process can be more easily resolved, and the building can be perfected before being sent to the site. With new technologies such as BIM, it is now possible to carry out up to 80% of the work on a construction project off-site

The main objective of this type of construction is therefore to save time, a common vision shared with Onfly.
